The Pico Remote Story: From “wire-free light switch” to Swiss-army keypad

Origins (2010-2014)
Lutron’s first spec sheet for a Pico Wireless Control appears in October 2014, describing a tiny, battery-powered RF keypad that could drive Maestro Wireless dimmers, PowPak modules, Serena shades and even GRAFIK Eye QS scenes—all without a processor or wiring. Engineers folded the remote into the earlier Energi TriPak energy-savings program, so the Pico’s DNA is as much commercial retrofit as residential convenience.

Why installers fell in love
At launch the Pico solved two pain points: it eliminated the need to snake traveler wires for 3-way jobs, and it used Lutron’s proprietary Clear Connect Type A RF (around 433 MHz in North America). The sub-GHz band is quiet, penetrates walls, and needs only a milliwatt-scale burst when you press a button, which is why a single CR2032 cell is rated for 10 years of typical use.

Range & real-world performance
Official literature quotes 30 ft / 9 m indoor range—short on paper so designers won’t over-spec, yet community testing shows reliable control well past 50 ft through drywall. Metal boxes or foil-backed insulation are the main enemies; mount on non-conductive surfaces for best results.

Type A vs Type X: why Pico stayed “A”
Clear Connect now has two flavors. Type A (433 MHz) favors sparse, mixed-device networks with ultra-low-power remotes like the Pico. Type X (2.4 GHz mesh) was added later for dense LED fixtures that need more bandwidth. Because Picos must sip power and coexist with legacy products, they remain Type A.(Lutron Assets)

How many Picos can I use?

  • Per load: up to 10 Picos can be paired to a single Caséta dimmer/switch.(support.lutron.com)

  • Per hub/system:

    • Caséta Smart Hub – 75 total devices (Picos count toward the cap).(Reddit)

    • RadioRA 3 – 200 Sunnata RF devices plus 200 legacy RA2/Pico/shade devices when four processors are networked.(RadioRA 3 by Lutron)

    • HomeWorks QS/QSX – thousands of addresses; in practice the limiting factor is project size, not Picos.

Direct-pair miracles (no processor required)
Because every Pico can act as its own master, you can link it straight to: Maestro Wireless dimmers or switches, PowPak ceiling modules, Sivoia QS Triathlon shades, Vive controllers, Serena DIY shades, and more—handy for retrofits or pop-up control without adding a hub.(Reddit, Lutron Assets)

Form-factor explosion
Over the years Lutron spun the core electronics into dozens of skins: 2-button, 3-button with raise/lower, 4-scene models, fan-only remotes, Sonos audio keypads, car-visor clips, night-light versions, and most recently the Pico Paddle Remote (2023) that looks like a standard Diva wall switch but pops off the wall to become a handheld.(Lutron)

What they can command today
Depending on engraving and firmware, a Pico can manipulate:

  • Lights – dim/brighten, scenes, or whole-home “goodnight.”

  • Shades & drapery – open, close, preset midway stops.

  • Fans – 4-speed control.

  • Audio – play/pause, skip, volume, Sonos favorites.(Lutron Assets)

  • Thermostats – indirectly via scene calls when a compatible thermostat is part of a Caséta, RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks project.

A Pico is essentially an ultra-efficient 433 MHz radio on a coin cell that talks Lutron-speak. From 2014 spec-sheet curiosity to today’s paddle-style remotes, it remains the installer’s cheat-code for adding smart switches anywhere in minutes—no wires, decade-long battery life, and rock-solid reliability.
