At a glance

What is in this home

Shades

Sheer shades over the dining room sliding doors, which soften daylight and keep the view.

Lighting and sound

Tunable Lutron Ketra recessed lights in the common areas, hand-built linear lighting throughout, chandeliers, and cabinet accent lighting, with ceiling speakers kept flush to the ceiling. See whole-home lighting control.

Security and wiring

Exterior security devices and a wired area for the network and panels.

Lighting decisions

Tunable where it counts, fixed where it saves

All of the recessed lights in the common areas are Lutron Ketra and are fully tunable. The linear lighting you see throughout the home was hand built by the Smarter Homes team.

The client chose a fixed color temperature for the linear lighting, set as the default for nighttime. That choice saved a large amount compared with Lumaris. The trade-off is that the linear lighting can't be tuned through the Ketra ecosystem, while the Ketra recessed lights still can.

It is a useful example of matching the lighting budget to how each space is used.

Cabinet lighting

Why you can't see the strip

In the glass display cabinet, no linear strip is visible. We custom built the linear to fit behind the hinges of the glass cabinet door, so the light shows on the bottles and glass without any fixture in view.

Dining room

Daylight you can control

Large glass doors bring in the view and the heat. Sheer shades take the edge off the sun while keeping the outdoors visible, and they can be set to the same scene as the pendant light above the table.

Planning the shade pockets and power with the builder keeps the ceiling and window trim clean. See our showroom to compare fabrics.

Lighting

Fixtures that are part of the design

Statement chandeliers need to dim smoothly and share a scene with the recessed lights around them. Ceiling speakers sit flush so the fixture stays the focal point.

Bar and pantry

Low light for evening use

Soft lighting under the bar cabinets and along the floor of the coffee and tea pantry gives a glow for late night without switching on the overheads. It needs drivers and wire routes planned before the cabinets go in.

The parts you do not notice

Network, control, and audio cabling comes back to a planned location, labeled and kept off the floor, so service is simple later. Security devices outside are small and sit flat to the stone.

Settling those locations with the builder before walls close is what keeps the finished rooms clean.

Questions

About this project

What systems are in this Austin home?

Motorized sheer shades on the dining room doors, lighting control for chandeliers, recessed lights, and cabinet accent lighting, ceiling speakers, exterior security devices, and a wired equipment area for the network and panels.

Why do shades belong in the lighting plan?

Sheer shades change how much daylight reaches a room and how much light spills out at night. When shades and lights are on the same system, one scene can lower the shades and set the lights. See our whole-home lighting control page.

What is the cabinet and floor-level lighting?

Low-level LED lighting under cabinets and along the floor gives a soft glow for night use without turning on overhead lights. It needs driver locations and wire routes planned before the cabinetry is built.

Is the lighting in this home tunable?

The recessed lights in the common areas are Lutron Ketra and fully tunable. The linear lighting is fixed at a default nighttime color temperature the client chose, which saved a large amount compared with Lumaris but means it is not tunable through the Ketra ecosystem.

How is the cabinet lighting hidden?

We custom built the linear lighting to fit behind the hinges of the glass cabinet door, so no strip is visible.
