Lutron Ketra Downlights in Austin: D3 and D4R
Full-color, natural white recessed lighting for new construction and finished ceilings, designed and installed by Smarter Homes.

Ketra D3 or D4R
Ketra downlights use four-channel full-spectrum light, so one fixture gives natural white light and 16.7 million colors. The choice between the two comes down to the ceiling. D3 goes in before drywall. D4R goes through a finished ceiling (Lutron Ketra D3, Lutron Ketra D4R). Both are wireless.

Why homeowners choose Ketra downlights
- Color Lock monitors output and corrects it, so a room looks the same on day one and year five.
- Vibrancy control changes how saturated colors and finishes look without changing color temperature or brightness.
- Beam angles you can change. D3 has field-changeable optics and a field-serviceable emitter, so a layout change does not mean a new fixture.
- Long life. Lutron rates both at 50,000 hours to L70 with a 5-year fixture, LED, and dimming warranty.
- Wireless. Native Clear Connect Type X wireless, indoor dry and damp locations (IP20).

The D4R in a finished ceiling
D4R installs through a standard cutout, which Lutron says reduces demolition and delays. It integrates a field-serviceable Ketra S30 lamp, and the regress can be adjusted after install.
We check joist layout, insulation, and ceiling thickness on a walkthrough before we quote.

Ketra downlight FAQ
What is the difference between Ketra D3 and D4R?
D3 is a 3-inch new-construction downlight that mounts to joists before drywall. D4R is a 4-inch remodeler that installs through a finished ceiling. Light range, color, CRI, and dimming are the same.
Can I change the beam angle later?
On D3, yes. Lutron lists field-changeable primary optics, so the beam can be changed without replacing the fixture.
How bright are they?
Lutron lists up to 1,148 delivered lumens for D3 and up to 800 for D4R, both at 18 W.
Are Ketra downlights wireless?
Yes. They use Lutron Clear Connect Type X wireless and are controlled by HomeWorks, Athena, or myRoom XC.
Do Ketra downlights work with RadioRA 3?
Lutron lists HomeWorks, Athena, and myRoom XC. It does not list RadioRA 3, so for RadioRA 3 we suggest Lumaris.
Should I choose Ketra or Rania?
Choose Ketra for color, the 1,400K to 10,000K range, and Vibrancy. Choose Rania for natural white only at a lower price. See Rania.
