The light seal

What full blackout takes

Blackout fabric stops light through the shade. Light still finds the edges. Lutron's own guidance is that a roller shade gives full blackout only when all four of these are specified together.

Blackout fabric

A 0% openness fabric, so no light passes through the material.

Side channels

Aluminum channels lined with wool pile close the light gap at each side. Lutron offers them in white, bronze and anodized finishes.

Pocket or fascia

A recessed pocket, or a fascia with a top back cover, blocks light above the roller.

Sill angle and hembar

A sill angle gives the hembar a surface to close against. Lutron recommends an exposed hembar with wool pile for shades in side channels.

Lutron references: maximizing light blockage, side channels, hembars with side channels and measuring and light gaps.

Which shades

Lutron shades for dark rooms

Sivoia QS roller shades

The usual choice for a media room. Wired to a power supply, so they work with side channels, and they can be coupled across a wide wall of windows.

Palladiom shades

An exposed roller with architectural brackets and a smaller light gap than a standard roller, for rooms where the hardware is on display.

Dual roller: sheer and blackout

Two fabrics at one window. A sheer filters daylight for everyday use, and the blackout shade comes down for a film.

Triathlon shades

Lutron does not offer side channels for battery-powered shades, so a battery-powered Triathlon shade suits a bedroom where room darkening is enough rather than a full light seal.

Control

One button for movie night

With HomeWorks QSX or RadioRA 3, a single keypad button can lower the blackout shades, dim the lights and leave a low step light on. The same shades can open on a schedule in the morning.

Plan early

Decide before drywall

Pockets, side channel depth and shade power wiring are cheapest to settle while the walls are open. Builders and architects can send plans for review on the builders and architects page, and you can see the full process on how we work.

Questions

Blackout shade FAQ

Will a blackout roller shade make the room completely dark?

Not by itself. A roller shade leaves a small light gap at each side. Lutron's guidance is that a roller gives full blackout only with side channels, a pocket or fascia with a top back cover, and a sill angle at the bottom.

Can battery-powered shades use side channels?

No. Lutron offers side channels for shades powered by a power supply, such as Sivoia QS. For a media room that needs full blackout, plan wired shades.

Can one window have a sheer shade and a blackout shade?

Yes. Lutron dual-roller brackets hold two fabrics at one window, so a sheer can filter daylight while the blackout shade stays up until movie time.

Do Roman shades block light without side channels?

Lutron notes that Roman shades come close to blackout without added construction, though a roller in side channels is the darkest option.
